How to obtain your National Identification Number (NIN)

A realistic way to retrieve one’s National Identification Number (NIN) through a USSD code has been released by the National Identity Management Commission.

As stated earlier by Nairametrics, the Nigerian Communications Commission previously given a two-week ultimatum to telecommunications operators to block all SIM cards that are not registered with national identity numbers.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) advised the general public, following the recent order, to beware of fraudsters and scammers on the prowl to swindle unsuspecting individuals.

NIMC advised the public not to click on any unverifiable connection asking for NIN in order to prevent this.

What you ought to know

The National Identity Management Commission has urged the public and people who are already enrolled in the NIMC scheme but have lost their NIN to dial * 346 # to recover the NIN in place of the latest NCC directive. On MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile, the USSD code is open.

  • NIMC advised such people to visit their telecom registration centers to have their NIN merged with their new SIM card for those individuals whose SIM card used for the registration of NIN was reallocated.
  • Individuals are urged to visit the NIMC office and pay the amount of N500 via Remitta for name modification. A further breakdown revealed that newspaper publication and court affidavit was required for those incorporating or modifying a new name, whereas those with a wrong name do not require newspaper publication.
  • It is recommended that those who have yet to register to visit https:/ or click HERE and visit the nearest registration center to complete the registration.
