I strongly support social media regulation — Governor Hope Uzodinma says

Hope Uzodinma, Imo state governor, says he is completely supportive of the Federal government’s proposal to control social media. In Nigeria, according to him, social media has been used to cause trouble.

This was what Uzodinma said when he received Police Inspector-General Adamu Mohammed in Owerri, the state capital, today, 5 November.

I strongly advocate that social media in Nigeria should be controlled. The opposition party prompted hoodlums to cause trouble in Imo because, after my address and promises to them, the real protesters went off the street. Governor Uzodinma said that

The police boss who is in the state to determine the extent of destruction of police facilities during the # EndSARS protests also commented, stating that social media was the biggest tool used across Nigeria to intensify the protest. Adamu said that during the civil unrest, police officers in the state were professionals.

I can assure you that during the demonstration, our men behaved professionally, had their weapons, were killed, and valued human dignity. I came primarily to see the vandalized property and to see the extent of harm done to Imo police facilities.

Many Nigerians have kicked against the planned regulation of social media, describing it as a breach of their rights to expression. A bill on the regulation is before the national assembly and has scaled second reading at the senate.
