Legendary golf commentator Peter Alliss has died at the age of 89, confirmed by his family.
Alliss was known as The Face of Golf’ and with his distinctive and chirpy presentation style, was associated with the sport in the UK.
Before turning to commentary, winning 31 tournaments and appearing in eight Ryder Cups before retiring in the 1970s, he was a great golfer in his own right.
He was part of the first-ever father-son duo at the Ryder Cup, alongside his son Percy.
But few would dispute that Alliss was most at home with the microphone in his lap, despite his performance on the course.
Most recently, he reported on the Masters last month, postponed to later years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Because of the limitations imposed due to the virus and also his own deteriorating health, the commentary was completed from his own home in Surrey.
A statement from the Alliss family read: “We announce the passing of golfing and broadcasting legend Peter Alliss with great sadness.”
“Peter was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and his family ask for privacy at this difficult time.”
Alliss was a dad of six.
In September, he was hospitalized, but those around him say the pace of his demise came as a shock.
Next year, Alliss was about to celebrate 60 years of broadcasting and was supposed to retire after the Ryder Cup.
In 2012, as part of the Lifetime Achievement division, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Barbara Slater, BBC Sport’s manager, said The voice of golf was Peter.”
With a rare ability to catch a moment with a magical turn of phrase that no one else could equal, he was an absolute master of his art.
“Just last month, he was doing what he loved at the amazing age of 89: reporting on the Master’s Golf for the BBC.
“As one of the greatest broadcasters of his time, he transcended his sport.
“He will be terribly missed and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this very sad time.”
Keith Pelley, chief executive of the European Tour, said We are deeply saddened to hear that Peter Alliss, truly one of the greatest golfers, has passed away.”
On everything he did in our game, but particularly as a player and a broadcaster, Peter made an indelible mark, and he leaves a remarkable legacy.
“Our thoughts are with the Alliss family and his wife, Jackie.”
