I’m still hopeful United ‘can do something special this season’ – Rashford says

In spite of their inconsistent start to the campaign, Marcus Rashford says he is still confident that Manchester United “can do something special” in 2020-21.

In the early stages of the new season, United fans were taken on a rollercoaster ride, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side proving to be one of European football’s most volatile teams.

In the Premier League, the Red Devils suffered damaging losses to Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Arsenal, while also losing three of their six group stage fixtures in the Champions League.

Ultimately, the Old Trafford outfit left the continental competition after a 3-2 defeat at RB Leipzig on Tuesday, which placed additional pressure on Solskjaer to produce a good result in the derby showdown against Manchester City this weekend.

United are currently seventh with at least one game in hand on all six teams above them in the top-flight standings, and a victory over their local rivals could put them in a position to mount a credible title challenge.

Rashford also trusts in the team, and indicated that May’s picking up big silverware remains a reasonable target, as he told MUTV: “I think it’s still way too early, with how the league went, to really look at the table.”

“In contrast to where we are now and all it takes is a few wins and teams can be up and down, I don’t know where we were three games ago.

We’re going to take it one game at a time to try to accumulate points to see where we’re a little later in the season. But I believe in the management, the manager and the workers, so, hopefully, this season we can still do something special.

He also recognizes, however the fact that outcomes in recent months have fallen short of expectations, and has encouraged his teammates to find a way to pull out wins more frequently while not playing at their best.

“I would put us up there in the top three or four most dangerous teams in the league. For us, it’s just about finding that consistent level of performance really,” Rashford added.

There have been occasions where we haven’t played well and won games, and if you’re going to do anything special this year in the league, we need to do a lot more of that. You know you’re not going to play every single game at your best, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to lose or draw a game. There’s always a way to win the game, and more needs to be discovered.

Listen, we’re a young team, we’re new, we’re solid, and, yeah, there’s no excuse… we’re always going to finish together strongly. When he came to United, I feel that’s one thing Ole brought with him just that knowledge, knowing the club, knowing what it is and what it stands for. Never giving up is right at the top of the list and on several occasions, we’ve seen it. We need to continue to do it.

Asked if he expects Sunday’s clash with City to be a cagey affair for both teams with lots on the line, Rashford replied: “No, I think we’re going to get chances.” You know, that’s one thing we’ve worked a lot on — compared to a few seasons ago, we get a lot more opportunities in games.
