Intense Gunshots heard, As NANS Convention Turns Bloody in Abuja


The current national convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja was rocked by powerful gunshots on Thursday.

Naijatask notes that at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Garki, Abuja, the convention is being held.

The student leaders are meeting to elect a new group of executives for the next year to pilot the Union’s affairs.

Danielson Bamidele Akpan, the outgoing president who was recently suspended, held the post for more than two years and refused to hand over power.

Trouble was said to have begun as a NANS coordinator from one of the faction zones on Thursday, brought in armed men as accreditation was on.

Upon arrival, We discovered that the armed alleged cultists were engaging the State Security Department (DSS) men on the ground in a gun battle.

It was said that some of the DSS officials took to their heels and retreated as the armed cultists nearly overwhelmed them.

More than 20 people were said to have been injured, with one being taken to the nearest hospital in the danger zone.

Normalcy later retired when the student leaders returned to the venue to resume the election after 11 midnight.

Safety was improved as soldiers from Abuja had to be deployed to provide security in addition to the DSS officers on the ground.

Adamu Kabir, an official of the NANS Convention Planning Committee (CPC), described the gun battle as “normal” in NANS in a tweet seen by us on Thursday night.


Kabir, better known as Karoll, said This sporadic shooting is an annual ritual that must be observed in order to test the robustness of the candidates contesting for the NANS presidency.

The shootings were attributed to interest from different groups by another student leader on the convention ground, who talked to us on condition of anonymity.

He accused the All Progressive Congress of ruling and the presidency of sponsoring a specific presidential candidate and giving him security cover to bully others.

A second term governor of the ruling party from the South West area was also accused by the student leader of attempting to hijack the procedures with a large amount of money over his interest in a presidential candidate (names withheld).
