Although Iran is not “excited” by Joe Biden taking over at the White House, according to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, it was very happy” to see the end of Donald Trump’s reign as US president.

Rouhani called Trump “rogue” and the most lawbreaking person in the US” at a televised meeting of the cabinet on Wednesday.

“We’re not very excited about Biden coming, but we’re really excited about Trump coming,” Rouhani said.

Iran is grappling with the Middle East’s biggest and deadliest COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2018, when Trump unilaterally withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, Iran has been under harsh economic sanctions from the US.

Biden has vowed to return the US to the agreement and lift sanctions if Iran meets its conditions, but has also indicated that talks are required to counter Iran’s missile program and regional activities, which Iran rejects.

Rouhani also replied to what he called international and local media reports that Iran’s conditions for talks vary from 2015, as the country is under more pressure.

The president acknowledged that things were different, but added that they are now more in favor of Iran than they were when the nuclear agreement was finalized.

Rouhani added that in 2015, among other things, Iran used to import petrol, oil, natural gas, and wheat, but is now exporting them.

“We cannot even compare our strength today with that time,” he said, adding that Iran’s missiles, military and nuclear programs have become far more empowered.
