On Thursday, former President Issa Hayatou was named Honorary President by the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Until he was finally defeated by suspended President Ahmad Ahmad, Hayatou headed the African body from March 1988 to March 2017.

Hayatou lobbied for South Africa to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup on African soil during his tenure as Caf manager, including the rise of African spots in global competition from two to five nations, among other achievements.

During the 42nd General Assembly of Caf in Egypt on Friday, which will be led by interim Caf President Constant Omari with Ahmad serving a five-year ban on unethical dealings, his nomination is expected to be confirmed.

“The Executive Committee agreed to recommend to the CAF General Assembly that Mr. Issa Hayatou, African Football’s eminent personality for all of his work, be given the rank of Honorary President of the CAF,” the statement read.

“For 30 years, from 1987 to 2017, this emeritus leader presided over the destinies of CAF, and this distinction salutes his action in the service of African football development that he defended wherever it was needed.”

His stay in the football administration began in Cameroon when at the age of 28, he became Secretary-General of the Cameroonian Football Federation and later became president of the FA.

The reign of Hayatou at Caf began on the continental scene when he succeeded Abdel Halim Muhammad of Sudan in 1988 and when he lost to Madagascan administrator Ahmad in 2017, he was contesting his seventh re-election bid.

The 74-year-old, who was acting head of Fifa from October 2015 to February 2016 following the ban of Sepp Blatter, is also an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In 2002, he contested for the post of Fifa President, but in the 53rd Fifa Congress held in South Korea, he was unable to defeat incumbent Blatter.
