While Juventus were held to a 1-1 Serie A draw by Atalanta in Turin on Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo missed the penalty.

When Federico Chiesa scored his first league goal for the club since joining on loan from Fiorentina after 29 minutes, Andrea Pirlo’s side had looked good on their way to a fifth consecutive win in all competitions.

In the 57th minute, however, Remo Freuler pulled the visitors level with a sumptuous penalty, four minutes later, before Ronaldo’s dismal spot-kick was held out by the impressive Pierluigi Gollini.

A point moved the champions to third, but if Stefano Pioli’s men defeated Genoa, they could finish the day six points behind leaders Milan. Meanwhile, Atalanta climbed up to eighth ahead of the late fixtures on Wednesday.

Within the opening 15 minutes, Juve started brightly and should have scored twice, but Ronaldo blazed over from close range and Alvaro Morata inexplicably scuffed a backheeled attempt wide with the goal at his mercy.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Chiesa made up for the profligacy of his team-mates, collecting Rodrigo Bentancur’s pass and whipping a sublime shot from 22 yards into Gollini’s top-left corner.

Duvan Zapata and Ruslan Malinovskiy were denied by Wojciech Szczesny shortly afterward as an improved Atalanta eventually fell short of restoring parity before the interval.

Immediately after the restart, Morata fired straight at Gollini when cleaned through before Freuler thundered home a spectacular equaliser after 57 minutes, the Switzerland international firing in for his first goal of the season from 25 yards.

After Chiesa had been fouled in the area, Ronaldo then squandered a golden chance to regain Juve’s advantage, clipping a tame penalty into Gollini’s arms, while the Atalanta goalkeeper did wonderfully to deny Morata shortly after.

Szczesny pawed the header of Cristian Romero away and Gollini held the strong drive of Weston McKennie out late as both sides had to settle for a point.
