The former Tottenham striker wants an all-time great to become a star of the present, but says for now he stays behind a Manchester United symbol.

Harry Kane has the capacity to be “one of the greatest” but is not yet at the level of Wayne Rooney and remains outside the top five all-time top strikers in the Premier League, says former Tottenham frontman Darren Bent.

In north London, a star turn is well on its way to cementing a spot amongst the great and good of English football.

For Spurs, a prolific 27-year-old sat on 200 goals out of 300 appearances with a phenomenal strike rate.

On 32 occasions across 49 appearances for his country, Kane has also found the mark and is currently captain of the Three Lions.

Rooney’s record haul of 53 seems to be in his sight, while in the Premier League, Alan Shearer’s mark of 260 can be chased down with a further 111 attempts required there.

Bent acknowledges that Kane is capable of becoming a legend, but believes that he is still sitting behind legendary figures like the great Rooney of Manchester United as things stand.

“TalkSPORT was told by the former Spurs striker,” Kane definitely has the potential to be one of the greatest if he continues on this path.

“I don’t think I’ve even put him in the top five. Longevity must play a function.

In 213 games, he has 149 Premier League goals, which is exceptional. But you can’t tell me that Kane is stronger when you look at the all-round kit of what he does when Wayne Rooney was at his utter best.

We’re only beginning to see the full kit with Kane now. You’re thinking of all the parts Rooney has been asked to fill. Everywhere, he played.

“How good he was, you forget. So to say that Harry Kane is the best center-forward in English, I don’t think so.

I’m a huge Kane fan and he’s one of those strikers where you think it’s a goal any time they get the ball around the box.

“Kane might probably be the best, but if you’re looking at the whole kit, holding up the ball, putting others into play, the strategy … you can’t beat Rooney.”

During his time in the top tier, Rooney, who remains the record goal-getter for United and England, registered 208 Premier League goals and is the only man other than Shearer to have reached a double century.
