Having continued his good start to life at Stamford Bridge, the Blues manager praised his Brazilian defender.
Since arriving at the club, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has singled Thiago Silva out for his “big effects.”
As they came from behind to beat Sheffield United 4-1 in the Premier League, the veteran defender scored his first goal for the Blues on Saturday.
Silva has since impressed in Chelsea’s defence, after a shaky debut, with Lampard’s side conceding just once in all competitions in their past six matches.
At Stamford Bridge, Lampard still expected Silva to be a success, but he was blown away by the action of the 36-year-old on and off the pitch.
“Because of the career he had, I knew the player he was when he came here,” Lampard said in a post-match press conference.
A few weeks before coming here, he played in the Champions League final, but his level of success since he’s been here, without much of a pre-season, impact, individual performance, the way he is between games, he’s so diligently attacking training.
When we have discussions, he looks at the opposition; he needs to know. But I have a lot of talks with him, too. He was amazing, and I can’t tell you more about him. Then today he has a goal, a very good goal. He made a great impact.
“I’m very open to make sure we give him the best rest in between to make it easy for him to do things. He looks fit, he’s fit, he’s new, and he’s supporting those around him and rubbing off. Long may it continue.”
For the Blues on Saturday, N’Golo Kante also impressed as the Frenchman claimed an assist and completed a game-high three tackles.
There was talk over the summer that Kante was close to leaving Chelsea, but Lampard emphasized his value to the side and revealed his own efforts to ensure that the 29-year-old stays fit.
Last year, he played about 50 percent of the games and that’s a big loss for half the season, his standard of player, “Lampard said.”
So I’ve taken a huge, big step to try to control his preparation and games and make sure we’re trying to get him ready and prepared for as many games as we can.
His characteristics are incredible, he can play in the midfield in many positions. It’s amazing the energy and ability to win the ball back, but also his ability to play the ball, which is often underestimated. He can play in various roles.
