Lecturers and Non-Academic staffs, to begin nationwide strike on February 5

sanu

February 5 was declared as the beginning of their indefinite strike by the Joint Action Committee, the JAC of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Related Institutions, NASU, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU.

A two-week alert was declared by the union following the Federal Government’s failure to resolve their concerns.

The unions reported that they had made a series of attempts to attract the government’s attention to the university system’s latent and increasing industrial unrest, but all to no avail.

Last week, the two unions embarked on a three-day strike over the alleged failure of the government to honour the MoU signed with them on 20 October 2020.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the JAC of the trade unions led by Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of the SSANU, and Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of the NASU, said that only one of the seven issues in the dispute had been partially resolved.

They identified issues such as irregularities in the payment of IPPIS, non-payment of received allowances, non-payment of national minimum wage arrears, delay in renegotiating the FG/NASU and SSANU 2009 agreements, non-payment of outgoing members’ retirement benefits.

Other concerns reported by the leaders of the union include the usurpation of the headship of non-teaching units by teaching staff in direct violation of service conditions and institution procedures, negligence and inadequate funding of state universities, and the non-constitution of university visitation commissions.
