Lil Wayne pleads guilty to federal firearms charges and might face up to 10 years jail term

On Friday, American rapper Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to a federal charge that, despite being a convicted criminal, he owned a gun and faces up to 10 years in jail.

After his private plane was searched on arrival in Miami from California on 23 December 2019, the rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, admitted possessing a .45 caliber pistol and six rounds of ammunition.

The father-of-four told police that the gun was a Father’s Day present, a search warrant said.

During a hearing remotely held before the U.S., he entered the plea. Judge Kathleen Williams of the City.

“I’m pleading guilty to the charge, your honor,” Carter told the judge.

The federal crime carries a potential prison term of 10 years, but according to sources, Carter will probably get much less time than that. On $250,000 bail, he is free but had to surrender his passport.

The allegation stems from Carter’s gun arrest in New York more than a decade ago, for which he was sentenced to eight months in prison because federal law forbids convicted felons from owning firearms.

Carter’s counsel, Howard Srebnick, said that he considers a motion to suppress the plane search as a violation of the civil rights of the rapper.

I have to admit that I thought it was a really viable movement. He agreed not to pursue a motion for suppression,’ said Srebnick.

In the press release, the Miami U.S. Attorney’s Office also said investigators discovered small quantities of cocaine, ecstasy, and oxycodone in Carter’s pocket, but he was not charged with any drug crime.

On Jan. 28, Wayne is due to be sentenced.
