The international defender from England acknowledges that he is unlikely to enter into new terms at Turf Moor, with his existing contract set to expire in the summer of 2022

James Tarkowski does not plan to sign a new contract at Burnley, with the defender linked to Liverpool revealing that the offers he got from the Clarets are decent enough “not close anywhere”.

The England international will hit free agency in the summer of 2022, as things stand.

Those at Turf Moor will be eager to avoid losing a precious asset for nothing, so in coming windows may face some huge choices.

In the recent past, major offers for Tarkowski have been knocked aside, with Sean Dyche unwilling to part with an established centre-half.

However, with Liverpool seemingly back in the market for replacements amid injury struggles at Anfield, interest is expected to be rekindled, and a door may be about to swing open.

“Tarkowski told The Telegraph, addressing his contract situation:” Burnley offered me a contract at the beginning of last season, which, for me personally, was not close to what I was going to sign, and I think the club understood. And this year they have come back again, and still, for me, it’s just not right.

Finances do matter, but I will get financially rewarded at this particular point, whatever direction I take, so the financial side is not even in my mind at the moment. More of my football is about it.

With the 27-year-old planning to dictate his own career path from this point on, Tarkowski has no intention of penning new words any time soon.

“He added:” We now had two transfer windows where the club decided, for whatever reason, that whatever was put on the table was not enough, and that’s all right because I signed a four-and-a-half-year deal. I just have to live with it and get on with my football, so I don’t whinge or don’t show up.

But I feel like the longer my contract lasts, I gain more control of my career than Burnley has control of it, which is what I feel I need right now.

Nothing has been learned or put to me that makes me think there is a situation in which I will sign a new Burnley contract. That may adjust, but that is the situation at present.

This season, Tarkowski continued to be part of Dyche ‘s plans, taking on six appearances to date, although it remains to be seen how long he will stick to Burnley ‘s books for.
