Lockdowni in England, ‘may last until the end of March’

According to Dailystar, A government minister has informed that the bulk of lockdown steps could be in place in England by March.

Michael Gove, Minister of the Cabinet Office, said the nation was in for a “very difficult” couple of weeks and could not provide a firm date for lifting the restrictions.

Last night, following the discovery of a new Covid-19 strain and a dramatic increase in cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared the third national lockdown.

Except for important reasons, people will not leave their homes, and schools and colleges will close from today.

This morning, Gove told Sky News: “The Government will do everything it can in order to ensure that we can roll out the vaccine more rapidly, help the vulnerable by getting the inoculations they need and make sure that at the end of what will undoubtedly be very, very difficult weeks, that life can finally return to normal.”

Pressed as to whether the lockdown was likely to last until March, Gove added: “We will be able to review the progress we made on February 15, just before the usual school half-term, and we hope that after that we will be able to gradually remove restrictions, but what I can’t do is predict-no one can predict-with precision exactly when we will be able to relax and when.

“What we do know is that the more effective our vaccination programme, the more people who are protected in that way, the easier it will be to lift these restrictions.”

He assumes, however, that March should mark the point at which constraints can begin to be lifted.

Gove continued: “We will keep these continuously under scrutiny, but you are completely right, we will not say with confidence that in the week beginning February 15-22, we will be able to remove restrictions.”

What we are going to do is do all we can to ensure that as many citizens as possible are vaccinated, so that restrictions can begin to be removed gradually.

“I think it is right to say that as we enter March we should be able to lift some of these restrictions but not necessarily all.”

The UK reported more than 50,000 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, January 4, for the seventh day in a row, along with 407 deaths.
