London is due to be plunged, perhaps as early as tonight, into a pre-Christmas Tier 3 coronavirus lockdown.

As policymakers and business leaders cautioned of the potentially disastrous effect on the economy, a decision could be taken today.

If London was transferred to the highest tier of Covid-19 limits, pubs and restaurants will be forced to close except for takeaway orders.

Over the business festive season, it will definitely have a major impact.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan set alarm bells ringing because as he revealed, a 75 percent rise in coronavirus cases had been announced.

He indicated that schools could be closed early for Christmas and reopen to monitor the spread of the virus later in January. Online courses will replace missing classes.

Mr. Khan said that if the capital is transferred from Tier 2 into Tier 3, the government would provide additional funding.

Asked if London could be moved up to Tier 3 limits, Mr. Khan said It’s possible because we’ve seen a large increase in the virus over the last few days.”

We’re going to have to wait and see what the government does – it’s a decision of the government, not my decision or the decision of the London leaders.

It’s worth looking at where the virus is circulating faster, and the places where we’ve seen the largest spike are worth looking at.

“It’s worth them asking themselves the question of whether a move to Tier 3 is a blunt instrument that doesn’t really address in a laser-like fashion where we are seeing the biggest problems.”

Infection rates in all boroughs except Kensington and Chelsea have rocketed “exponentially” and cases are now off the charts”

There were 17 boroughs where the average of seven days exceeded 200 cases per 100,000 individuals.

According to the latest estimates, the east London borough of Havering has the highest incidence of coronavirus in the capital, with 1,314 new cases recorded in the seven days up to 9 December, equal to 506.3 per 100,000 cases.

The Mayor of London wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson explaining his concerns.

Given the rise in Christmas shoppers, he called for increased testing in schools and to make face coverings compulsory in busy outdoor public spaces.
