The former City skipper is looking forward to seeing the last two English football champions face off on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

The home date of Manchester City with Liverpool on Sunday “almost determines the season,” says former Blues captain Richard Dunne, with England’s last two champions, predicted to again lead a title charge.

Liverpool, who brought to a close in 2019-20 their 30-year wait for top-flight glory, have made their way back to the loftiest of perches.

On the hand of Jurgen Klopp, who have not been at their free-flowing best this season, the majority of their domestic rivals are looking down once more.

While they have a game in hand, City, which has also struggled for consistency from the blocks, sits five points off the pace in 10th.

Many have indicated that the fight for dominance in 2020-21 would be much closer than it was late, but Dunne still maintains that when they lock horns, the Reds and Blues are the teams to capture and will decide the destination of major silverware.

“Ahead of an eagerly awaited encounter at Etihad Stadium, he told Sky Sports:” It’s enormous. The season is almost determined by this game.

Over the last few years, the two teams have not lost a lot of games, so they know that the value of the three points in this one is huge.

After beating Liverpool 4-0 last year, City will go into it, but they’ll know it wasn’t the real side of Liverpool, they’d already wrapped up the league by then.

It will be very competitive. I think they’re going to understand how big it is for City, and also for Liverpool. They’re going to realize that all so far has kind of been a warm-up for this game.

It’s not just the outcome of a game this weekend, it could turn the championship around, and it could give you the hope that you’re going to run and try and create a lead, or that City will catch up with Liverpool.

The players are really going to be up for it and they’re looking forward to it. It has the makings of a fantastic game.

“Pressed on whether all three points can be taken by Pep Guardiola’s hosts, Dunne added:” Town needs to win. They’re only a few points behind Liverpool, and on the weekend, I fancy them.

“I think they’re in decent shape, Liverpool has a few defensive issues, and I love City to take advantage of that.”

Both sides face some major selection decisions going into a crunch conflict, with untimely injuries working against them, and Dunne feels that Ferran Torres could be asked to lead the line for the Blues, who impressed as a makeshift striker in City’s Champions League victory over Olympiakos.

“I was really impressed with Torres playing center-forward,” the former Republic of Ireland international defender said.

They signed him to play on the wing, but he ended up in a central role through conditions. The way that he played was very good for the squad.

He’s been stretching behind defenses and offering them numerous choices. If it were Torres who began, I wouldn’t be surprised.

“It would be brilliant to have [Sergio] Aguero back, and [Gabriel] Jesus returned with that goal. It’s a real challenge to Liverpool, even though you have two of them in reserve to come on at any point in the game.

“I just think the fitness and the rhythm of Torres point to him starting this weekend.”
