Man stabs flatmate to death and lived with the decomposing body for six weeks

A man stabbed his flatmate to death and then for six weeks, held the decomposing body of his victim in a chair in his front room.

Anil Vegad was killed by Matthew Chibnall, but he kept the horrific crime a secret until he had spent all of Mr Vegad’s money.

On April 13 of this year, Chibnall stabbed Mr. Vegad, 57, in the shoulder. Mr Vegad’s wound caused him to bleed to death.

He then used Mr. Vegad’s bank card to visit stores and purchase alcohol, leaving the body in the flat they shared on Eden Lane, Coventry, propped up in a chair.

Eventually, Coventry Live notes, the bank account of Mr. Vegad was clean, at which point Chibnall went to the police station in Coventry and admitted to killing his friend.

He told the officers that Mr. Vegad had been drinking on Easter Monday with him and his friend felt unwell and collapsed the next day.

When the police visited the apartment, however, they found Mr. Vegad dead in the living room, obviously suffering from a deep stab wound. There were two other knife slashes on the chair as well.

He had actually waved the knife at Mr. Vegad to calm him down, Chibnall maintained.

Judge Andrew Lockhart QC said he concluded that Mr. Vegad had not planned to be killed by Chibnall, but that he intended to cause him very serious harm.

The judge claimed that both men were “heavy drinkers” and that Mr. Vegad had become “dissatisfied” with Chibnall’s life and begged him to leave, but Chibnall declined.

He said the two men were drinking at the flat on April 13 and an argument “flared up” with Chibnall “taking up a kitchen knife in anger” and threatening Mr. Vegad with it.

This week, Judge Lockhart said at Coventry Crown Court: “You hit the chair twice and then in anger, you hit the shoulder with a major blow” (of Mr Vegad).

The knife went to his shoulder deep inside. It caused him a great deal of pain. The altercation ended with this.

“He was moving about in agony and literally bleeding to death across a 12 to 18-hour period. You basically did nothing at all for him – not a shred of empathy did you show. You only cared for yourself.”

“You basically sat with this man’s body week after week,” he said, “He died before your eyes and you did none of six weeks to reveal to anyone that he was dead.”

Chibnall was found guilty yesterday of murder after a Coventry Crown Court trial and was sentenced today for life with a minimum sentence of 18 years, minus any days spent on remand after his conviction until the parole board can even recommend him for release.

He will stay on leave for the rest of his life if he is released.
