The English Premier League and UEFA have threatened to bar any team from the European Super League that is in the top six on the table.
The threat was made in a joint press release by the two governing bodies, which condemned proposals for a European Super League.
Twelve clubs from England, Spain, and Italy have agreed to participate in a new league format that will effectively end the UEFA Champions League.
Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham are among the EPL’s ‘big six’ clubs, according to reports.
There will be no promotion or relegation in the current league system.
The statement’s other signatories include the English Football Association, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), La Liga, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), and Lega Serie A.
They reacted angrily to what they called a “cynical project,” threatening those involved with severe penalties.
“UEFA, the English Football Association and the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga, and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A have heard that a few English, Spanish, and Italian clubs are preparing to announce the formation of a closed, so-called Super League,” according to the announcement.
“If this occurs, we – UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, as well as FIFA and all of our member associations – will remain unified in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project built on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society requires unity more than ever.
“We would take all available steps at all levels, including judicial and sporting, to prevent this from occurring. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.
“As previously declared by FIFA and the six Federations, the clubs in question will be barred from competing in all other domestic, European, or international competition, and their players will be refused the ability to represent their countries.”
The UEFA Champions League and Europa League 2020/21 seasons are already in the semi-finals.
The teams that advanced to the semi-finals were Real Madrid, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.
Real Madrid will face Chelsea in the semifinals, while Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will compete for a spot in the final.
