Many Police officers are still Carrying Handbags For VIP’s Wives – El-Rufai claims

Given the scarcity of manpower in the military, a number of the Nigeria Police Force members are not involved in police service.

This is the stance of Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who is concerned about the incidence of insecurity in the region.

The governor insisted on Monday, speaking during his speech on Channels Television’s Politics Today, that decentralizing the police was the way to go for Nigeria.

“We have always made a very clear statement that a centralized police force in a federation does not work; Nigeria is the only nation in the world to have only one police force in a federation.”

Governor El-Rufai said:

“We have proposed that states should be able to have their own police and that even city municipalities should be allowed to have neighborhood policing.”

He added:

“The number of policemen we have in Nigeria is insufficient, less than half of what we need, and a large percentage of them are engaged in non-police duties, such as carrying handbags from important people’s wives.”

“We need to have a greater police footprint in Nigeria and the only way to accomplish that quickly is to amend the Constitution and put police on the concurrent list as recommended by the True Federalism Committee of APC so that we have more police officers.”

Governors Are Frustrated

The governor alleged that like other countries in the country, it was only in Nigeria that the federation had only one police force.

He said the state governments were responsible for the operating costs of the police, including the allocation of funds for cars, petrol, and correspondence, among others.

Governor El-Rufai has condemned the situation where governors in their states had rather little or no power over police affairs.

He said

“I am frustrated in my state, many governors in their states are frustrated; only in name are we named chief security officers, we have no power over the state’s unified instruments.

“We are nearly powerless. The #EndSARS protest clearly illustrated that governors’ power over the police and the military was restricted.
