Mason appointed as Tottenham boss following Mourinho sacking

Ryan Mason has been announced as Tottenham’s new interim manager following Jose Mourinho’s sacking on Monday.

Mourinho was fired from Spurs just six days before the team’s appearance in the 2020-21 Carabao Cup final, after just 17 months in charge.

Mason, who had been working as the club’s head of player recruitment, will now be charged with delivering their first major trophy since 2008 and will see out the remainder of the season until a new permanent manager is announced over the summer.

Tottenham have issued an official statement confirming the news: “We can now confirm that, following Jose Mourinho’s departure, Ryan Mason will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

“Chris Powell and Nigel Gibbs will serve as interim assistant head coaches, and Michel Vorm will serve as interim goalkeeping coach. As a first-team coach, Ledley King will remain in his place.”

Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman, added: “We have a lot of faith in this young group of players.

“We have a cup final and six Premier League games ahead of us, so we’ll concentrate all of our efforts on finishing the season strongly.”

Mourinho was hired to end Spurs’ long wait for a big trophy, and despite the fact that he would have had the opportunity to do so on Sunday, the board opted to make an early shift after the team’s poor run of results.

Tottenham slipped out of contention for the Premier League title after the festive season and left the FA Cup at the fifth-round stage before falling victim to a spectacular shock at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League round of 16.

Everton kept Mourinho’s side to a 2-2 draw in his final game in charge, leaving Spurs in seventh place in the Premier League, five points behind the top four, with just six games remaining to try and qualify for the Champions League.
