According to The Verge, Because of the current pandemic, Microsoft is shutting down its mobile Minecraft Earth game in June. The ambitious game was planned to compete with Pokémon Go and cover the globe in virtual blocks for players to meet and play together.

“In the current global situation, Minecraft Earth was modeled around free movement and collaborative play, two things that have become almost impossible,” says the Minecraft team.

“As a result, we have made the difficult decision to re-allocate our resources to other areas that provide the Minecraft community with value and to end Minecraft Earth support in June 2021.”

The final build of the game is being released today, which decreases the amount of time it takes to craft in the game and the cost of some materials. In the coming months before the game is disabled on 30 June, it is planned to allow players to craft and create more easily and safely at home.

After June 30th, players will no longer be able to download or play Minecraft Earth, and Microsoft will be deleting player data on July 1.

Minecraft Earth was first unveiled by Microsoft in May 2019. The idea was to describe the experience of playing Minecraft through augmented reality in the real world and to allow players to construct virtual buildings from materials.

The game focused on social interactions with others, and it was part of Microsoft’s broader initiative to exploit the HoloLens and Azure cloud server teams’ assistance.

Apple also invited Microsoft on stage to show the new title at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) before the game’s publication.

Players will no longer be able to buy Minecraft Earth items, and any paying ruby balances will be transformed into Minecoins that you can use in the Minecraft Marketplace to purchase skins, maps, and mini-games.

“For the amazing talent in the Minecraft community, we are eternally grateful,” says the Minecraft team. “It wasn’t an easy decision, and we’re doing our best to make sure that you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before the sun goes down.”
