As Juventus ended Milan’s undefeated start to the season, Federico Chiesa scored a brilliant brace and clinched a vital 3-1 win, bringing the Serie A champions up to fourth in the table.

To become the first team to defeat Milan’s leaders in the league in 28 matches, Andrea Pirlo’s men created a scintillating attacking display and did so without leading scorer Alvaro Morata.

On both occasions, Chiesa scored with assured finishes in either half, helped by Paulo Dybala, and Milan’s waves of attacking pressure found Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny in fine form until the net was found by Davide Calabria.

In a turbulent season, the Bianconeri, who added a third through replacement Weston McKennie, will hope this was a defining moment, having only played with the guile and poise they missed for much of it, while Milan will focus on a missed chance to extend their lead to four points at the top after Inter lost to Sampdoria.

Early on, the high press of Juventus overwhelmed Milan and Paulo Dybala checked Gianluigi Donnarumma from six yards before Chiesa crashed into the post with a thunderous strike.

The Old Lady’s superb start paid off with 18 minutes played, Dybala’s smart back-heel sending Chiesa into the area as well as the Fiorentina loanee sent out a low shot bouncing from 12 yards towards the far corner of Donnarumma’s net.

Juve had Szczesny to thank for holding them ahead with a series of saves, but after the lively Rafael Leao teed him up, he was unable to prevent Calabria’s shot from reaching the top corner, while Juventus believed that Adrien Rabiot was fouled in the build-up.

Szczesny dropped down well to save the powerful 20-yard shot by Diogo Dalot as Milan came out shooting after the break, but Juve weathered the storm before Aaron Ramsey missed a golden opportunity to give them the lead, shooting wide from short quarters with only Donnarumma to beat.

Chiesa struck again just after the hour mark, Dybala picking him out on the edge of the box where he bent a beautiful left-footed shot into the far corner.

Chiesa then left the pitch with an injury and was substituted by McKennie, who, after a jinking run through Milan’s defence by fellow replacement Dejan Kulusevski, swept home Juventus’ third in the 76th minute.
