More than 500 Kaduna bandits and their leaders agree to surrender weapons after meeting with Islamic scholar, Sheikh Gumi

About 600 alleged bandits and their commanders have agreed to lay down their arms and embrace peace, terrorizing communities in Kaduna State.

Holding talks with Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and State Police Commissioner Umar Muri in a forest in Sabon Garin Yadi, Giwa State Local Government Area, the bandits announced the decision.

It was gathered that Gumi preached to the bandits and pleaded with them to allow peace to reign.

In Zaria, Giwa, and the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari highway, the bandits whose wives were seen in tears after the cleric’s message of peace promised to cease hostilities and ensure security.

They cautioned, however, that should security agents continue to harass their families and destroy their belongings, they would return to their old ways.

They also vowed to return to the forests should their own portion of the peace deal not be fulfilled by the government. The specifics of the deal have not been made available.

The bandits gave their cattle rustling, continuous harassment by security operatives, and government negligence as reasons for their use of crime.

Over the years, the commanders of the suspected bandits have said they have been subjected to arbitrary arrests, extortion, and even murder by law enforcement agents of their innocent relatives.
