Before lighting their house on fire and killing herself, a mum slaughtered her children.
Oreanna Myers, 25, used a shotgun and left a note on December 8 at the scene near the town of Williamsburg in Virginia, USA.
WV Metro News notes that she was discovered wearing a coat with a hood and a red line drawn across her forehead.
According to Greenbrier County Sheriff Bruce Sloan, three of her children were her own.
Brian Bumgarner was married to Myers and the other two children were from his first marriage.
During a 10-day stretch previous to the accident, he had spent time away from home because the family’s car had been involved in a collision.
Bumgarner was living with other members of the family who had been taking him to work.
Myers had written that she was suffering from a mental disorder in many documents found at the scene.
One read: “This is the fault of no one but my own.” My ghosts have taken me over. I’m sorry, I haven’t been good enough.
She also wrote to her husband, “You’re not going to have anything to go back to but a corpse.” Does no one care why I ought to?
The money will come and go, and there will be no substitute for me until I go. I beg for support and scream, but never get it.
“It is my mental health that needs to tend to, help me, no longer care.”
Shaun Dawson Bumgarner, seven, Riley James Bumgarner, six, Kian Myers, four, Arikyle Nova Myers, three, and Haiken Jirachi Myers, one, were identified as the children.
Sloan confirmed that Myers had undergone no mental illness treatment and that the children had no history of mistreatment.
“We obviously can’t figure out why Oreanna Myers chose to put an end to the lives of five children and then take her own life,” he said.
“Nevertheless, that’s what we concluded occurred through all the facts and evidence obtained during this investigation and all the information acquired.”
