While attempting to pose for a holiday selfie, a mother is thought to have fallen more than 250ft to her death.

An inquiry into how the woman, from Craigiebourne, Melbourne, died was initiated by police in Australia.

The incident took place at Borora Lookout in the Grampians National Park, Victoria state, on Saturday at around 3 pm.

According to the Herald Sun, cops say the death is not being viewed as suspicious after the 38-year-old woman climbed through a safety barrier and is thought to have slipped.

It took six hours to coordinate a joint operation between Victoria Police and the State Emergency Service (SES) to retrieve the body from the scene.

According to the Mirror, a SES spokeswoman said: “Originally there was a plan in place for us to send a search and rescue team, but then we realised the significance of the incident.”

It is assumed that the tragic accident occurred in front of her family as the woman tried to pose for a photo.

A SES spokeswoman said that after climbing over the railing, the deceased woman had dropped at least” 80 meters and units from four regions attended the fall. They took specialized rescue equipment and a police helicopter assisted them.

About 270 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, Boroka Lookout is near Halls Gap.

It is a popular tourist site with a five-minute walk from the car park and panoramic views of the eastern Grampians.

The Age announced that the police minister of the state of Victoria, Lisa Neville, called for people not to risk their lives chasing “extreme” social media images.

Although the death was tragic, Ms Neville said that authorities could not barricade every dangerous spot in popular tourist areas to prevent misadventure fatalities.

“In the end, we can’t rope off every part of Victoria. People have to take responsibility,” said Ms Neville on Sunday. “
