The design of a Diego Maradona-inspired jersey was invented by Napoli last year and the kit will be revealed on Sunday, four days after his death – According to Goal.
Napoli will unveil a fourth new kit that pays tribute to Diego Maradona, four days after the death of the club hero.
Maradona, one of the best football players of all time, died of a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 60. At the beginning of November, he was resting at home after brain surgery.
While at the time of his death, coach Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata of the Argentine team, Maradona was more known for his excellent playing career, during which he helped his nation to excel in the 1986 World Cup and also played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli and Seville.
As he led them to two Serie A titles, a Coppa Italia and a UEFA Cup crown, it was his time in Naples which is remembered as his prime.
Before Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League victory over Rijeka at Stadio San Paolo, which is set to be renamed Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Napoli’s new team all took to the pitch in shirts emblazoned with Maradona’s name and the famous number 10 on the back.
The tributes of the club to their greatest player do not end there as they reported on Sunday that a new strip inspired by Maradona and Argentina, modeled last year is scheduled to be unveiled and worn later in the day against Roma.
A comment on the club’s official website read: “We were thinking about designing a special jersey together with Kappa a year ago that echoes Diego Maradona, his beloved Argentina, and the close bond with the people of Naples.”
Our dream was that it would be possible for Diego to see it, maybe even wear it and share our enthusiasm about it.
“It was decided that during the match between SSC Napoli and Roma, the new kit would be revealed on matchday nine of the Serie A campaign.
“The jersey that the players will don tonight will have an even greater significance than initially intended.”
Napoli did not offer any further information on the aesthetics of the kit, but as famously worn by Argentina, the graphics following their announcement revealed prominent blue-and-white lines.
In Serie A, Napoli went into the game with Roma in seventh, but a victory will help them to leapfrog their opponents and retain their title challenge.
