Nigeria is divided into 36 states and the jurisdiction of the federal capital (FCT). Tertiary education levels were extended to cover every sub-region of Nigeria as a result of the oil boom years of the 1970s.

The only bodies allowed to run universities were formerly the federal government and state governments. Recently, individuals, corporate bodies, and religious bodies have been given licenses to create private universities in the region.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) is the primary accreditation and regulatory body that enforces universal requirements and sets the ability of each university in Nigeria for entry.

1. University of Lagos

Popularly known as UNILAG, the University of Lagos is a public academic university in Lagos, Nigeria. It is one of the five universities of the first generation in Nigeria and was established in 1962. In global education journals, it is ranked among the world’s best universities.

2. University of Ibadan

In Ibadan, Nigeria, the University of Ibadan is a public academic university. The campus, one of several colleges within the University of London, was established in 1948 as University College Ibadan. Federal University of Technology Minna is a university owned by the Federal Government  of Nigeria and located in Minna, Nigeria. 8. Covenant University

Covenant University is located in Ota, Ogun Province, Nigeria, The university is a private Christian university.
