Due to a coronavirus outbreak at the North-East club, the Premier League announced that the match between Aston Villa and Newcastle was postponed.

Originally, the match was to be played on Friday, but a spike in Covid-19 cases at the training ground in Newcastle culminated in some players and staff members needing to go into exile.

A statement on the league’s website says, “Following a Premier League Board meeting today, Newcastle United’s fixture at Aston Villa, due to be played at 8pm, Friday 4 December, has been postponed,”

Following a large rise in Covid-19 cases at the club, Newcastle filed an appeal with the Premier League to rearrange the game, which culminated in Public Health England North East (PHE) recommending that their training facilities remain closed.

As a result, the Premier League Board decided that the club could not practice and plan properly and comfortably for their match on Friday.

“The decision has been taken in consultation with Newcastle United and Aston Villa, and following extensive consultation with PHE and Premier League medical advisors, with the health of players and staff the priority.”

On their website, the Magpies released a message reading: “Several Newcastle United players and staff members are now self-isolating at home after returning positive test results in recent days and the club’s training center site has been temporarily closed in order to contain the spread of the virus.”

“Villa endorsed the decision to postpone, with a statement on their website saying: “Aston Villa will announce that the club completely supports the decision of the Premier League to postpone our fixture on Friday with Newcastle United.

“We would really like to thank both the Premier League board and Newcastle United for their comprehensive cooperation during the phase which resulted in this decision being reached. Everyone at Aston Villa wishes a speedy recovery to all those at Newcastle United affected by the virus.”

Later this week the Newcastle players and staff will be checked again and then the club will consult with the Premier League and Public Health England to discuss the outcomes.
