NIMC Staffs Call Off Strike, Issues New 21-Day Ultimatum

NIMC staff strike cripples NIN registration

On Friday, the two-day notice strike initiated by the workers of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) was called off.

This was revealed in an interview with the Daily Trust in Abuja on Friday by the chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) NIMC unit, Lucky Michael Asekokhai.

Asekokhai told the Daily Trust, “We have called off the strike and all our members will resume on Monday.”
The union chairman, who said the workers had accomplished their goal with the 2-day strike, called on the Federal Government to respond in good time to their demands.

He, though, said that the Federal Government was given a fresh 21-day ultimatum to meet the NIMC staff’s demands or face a full blown strike.

FG on Tuesday to consult with the union

Meanwhile, the federal government will meet with NIMC workers members in Abuja on Tuesday to discuss their health.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, will lead the FG’s team at the meeting, Daily Confidence was told by a top official of NIMC on Friday.

Also at the meeting would be the executives of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the official who didn’t want to be called said.

The notice strike was launched primarily to demand security measures against COVID-19 for the NIMC workers and also to demand a new salary structure.

The 2-day strike disrupted the National Identity Number (NIN) registration process across the country on Thursday and Friday.

On December 15, the Federal Government ordered telecom operators to link the SIM of their subscribers with their NINs.
