The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that the National Identification Number (NIN) will become a mandatory prerequisite for obtaining a driver’s license by the second quarter of this year.

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal, also stressed in a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, his commitment to ensuring that NIN is compulsory for all categories of vehicle registration, effective from the second quarter of 2021.

This was in complete line with the presidential instructions, he said.

He claimed that it was required that all vehicle registration applicants would apply their national identification number as a precondition for the registration of their vehicles, adding that no waiver would be given to anyone regardless of their status in society.

Kazeem stated that the exercise was imperative in view of the vital role that a harmonized citizen information database would play in national development in addressing the challenges of identifying individuals to assist security agencies in data collection and rapid retrieval to resolve critical national security challenges.

Kazeem claimed that the Corps Marshal has invited members of the public who have not registered with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in the ongoing NIN registration to do so, because the Corps will not register any vehicle whose owner is not documented in the NIMC database.

Starting from the second quarter of this year (2021), if you want to register your car, it will be compulsory for you to have your NIN, according to the Corps Marshal.

This is part of the controls for defense. It makes the matter simpler and helps the government in national planning, critical decision-making, and also enhances adequate intelligence collection for the protection of lives and property once you have your NIN.

You should note that since 21 December 2020, when the Corps Marshal ordered that all applicants for the National Driver’s License in Nigeria must apply the National Identification Number (NIN) from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) before they can be confiscated for any class of licenses issued by the FRSC, FRSC has begun compliance with this Directive.
