On Monday, December 21, the Nigerian Senate to pass the 2021 budget

House of Representatives

The Senate will hold a special session on Monday 21 December to pass the 2021 budget, which is currently before the National Assembly, into law.

This was disclosed by the Senate President in a statement released by Ezrel Tabiowo, his Special Assistant (Press). According to the statement following a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi (APC-Kebbi North) and sponsored by the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia South), the Senate president made this known during the plenary session.

The delay in the passage of the budget, according to the Senate President, was to allow the Appropriations Committee to include a late request from the Executive branch of government for additional expenses.

Our Appropriation Committee has been working round the clock. The report of the Committee on Appropriations was supposed to be received today, but there was a late request from the Executive Branch of Government for some extra spending, and we want to make sure that our Committee works to create a clean document so that they do not present this document today.

The Committee, however, has said that the study will be ready by the weekend. Consequently, on Monday, December 21, 2020, we will hold a special session only to consider and approve the 2021 budget.

This is consistent with our policy plan to ensure that the annual budget has a period from January to December.

We did that last year and we’re going to do it again with the grace of God, Lawan said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Senate also abandoned the consideration of the Medium Term Expenditure Structure (MTEF) and Fiscal Policy Paper of the Conference Committee Report 2021-2023 (FSP).
