Oppo explores Smart Phones with interchangeable camera modules

By covering them under the monitor or even flipping up the rear camera, phone manufacturers have tried to remove unsightly selfie cameras, but Oppo can overcome that by an unconventional method: putting the camera in your hands.

Oppo is patenting a removable camera module for smartphones, according to Engadget. If you wanted to take a selfie or take more of a shot, you just had to pull the module from the back and point it to your subject.

There are two cameras as well as options for USB-C, NFC, WiFi, and Bluetooth in the design shown.

Not surprisingly, when you line up your images, a lithium-ion battery can keep the module powered. If you could mix and match camera modules, it’s not clear, although this increases the possibility of updating the cameras of your phone without replacing the whole unit.

This is a patent, not a roadmap for a device, and it is not guaranteed that Oppo will create a phone like this.

In favor of a more traditional collection in the X2 Pro, the company is well-known for having ditched the Find X pop-up camera.

However, Oppo also just introduced a rollable phone idea, and it’s no stranger to other exotic ideas. In the years ahead, we wouldn’t rule out a real-world release altogether.
