Our members are being recruited by Private universities – ASUU claims

On Thursday, 19 November, the President of the Academic Workers Union of Universities, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, announced that private universities are now hiring some of their participants due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its demands in the middle of an ongoing strike that has lasted for months.

Ogunyemi reiterated that with court action, the government can not threaten the university lecturers.

He said;

If they intend to go to court to intimidate the union to surrender, talking about options. For scholars you don’t do that, no nation has ever survived it so we all have choices.

We’re talking about brain loss now, and I can assure you authoritatively that 25 scholars in the North-East have been extracted from this university in Yola in the last two months. The maker, we know. That’s how it is, because public colleges are now poached by private universities because they can only flourish as public universities are crumbling.

We are also aware that Ethiopia arrived in Nigeria a few months ago and has harvested as many as 200 professors, and they are still searching for more. If the government requires its appointees to continue educating students, I don’t know.

Of course, plenty of them don’t have kids at public colleges, because they can’t experience it at all. Our national riches are our academics, and we should not allow them to be decimated.

Ogunyemi further claimed that ASUU would oppose any effort by the Federal Government to expand the process of the honesty test carried out on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution software they suggested, countered Chris Ngige’s statement by the Minister of Labor and Jobs, stating that the integrity test carried out on UTAS will take one week.
