Prof. Edward Olanipekun, Vice-chancellor, Ekiti State University (EKSU), revealed that the institution’s students owed a cumulative sum of N2bn as tuition fees.

Olanipekun said the inability of the students to pay their tuition fees took a huge toll on the desire of the university to fulfill its financial responsibilities and demands for better academic and administrative activities.

On Monday, during a press conference heralding the university’s 24th convocation ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti, called on parents to pay the institution’s children’s fees to meet many of its demands.

Our students owe an unpaid tuition fee of N2 billion which has yet to be paid into the coffers of the university.

The university will produce institutional e-mails to all students where we can interface, as part of the ways to recover the debt. But there is no way you can communicate with lecturers if you are due. We use this as the approach for online and physical instruction. As a debtor, you do not meet with your lecturers or superiors for a lecture or conference.

In order to help our financial situation, we call on parents to please pay for their children.

Olanipekun noted that at the ceremonies, a total of 11,394 students will be conferred through virtual means with degrees ranging from diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, masters, and PhDs.

He added that first-class honors were obtained from number 52; while second-class honors (upper division) were bagged in 2035, 5372 earned second-class honors (lower division) and 2,505 for third-class honors.

The VC reported that “233 will be awarded a diploma, 10,509 will be awarded a bachelor’s degree, 97 will be awarded a post-graduate diploma, 408 will be awarded a Masters degree and 147 will be awarded a Ph.D. degree.”

According to Olanipekun, the event will feature the inauguration of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, as University Chancellor by Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the university visitor and Ekiti State Governor.
