COVID-19 test results performed on 35, 419 batch B Youth Corpers recorded 731 confirmed cases. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has confirmed it.

Mustapha, at the Tuesday’s presentation of the Presidential Task Force said the PTF performed the testing of batch B Corpers using Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDTs) (RDTs).

He said that when compared to 108 reported with Batch A, the confirmed cases among batch B companies were much higher.

The SGF has confirmed that it is on record that cases have been registered by members of the Corps from all states of the Federation.

CACOVID

Mustapha also revealed that the Alliance Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), led by the private sector, is supporting the national response with 100 oxygen cylinders per day in the FCT.

A lot has been addressed in the last two weeks about case management and, in particular, the provision of oxygen to save lives. We are pleased to inform you that CACOVID, the private sector, has begun funding our response to distribution to critical care centers in Abuja with 100 oxygen cylinders per day until the end of March 2021,” Mustapha said.

He also expressed concern about the growing daily numbers reported, saying that 1,204 infections were recorded in Nigeria on Monday 4 January.

This was the highest number ever reported on a regular basis since we started the national response. We are starting to see from our study the impact of activities carried out during the Christmas festivities.

We can only hope that, beyond control, numbers will not escalate. We, however, still appeal to all citizens to take full responsibility through compliance and vigilance.

Low testing

“As of date, the data for Nigeria shows total cases 91,351; cumulative tests 958,911; deaths 1,318. Week 53 reported 57 deaths, the highest since we started in any single week.

The rate of infections among health care staff is also increasing, and this calls for surveillance to intensify. Nigeria has joined South Africa in Africa in registering the highest cases of regular infection,” Mustapha said.

The SGF, speaking about the test rates, said that testing is a key national response strategy and that Nigeria has about 100 laboratories nationwide. According to him, there are 71 public laboratories, 22 private laboratories and seven corporate laboratories, all of which are intended to help improve the country’s testing.

He said, “Regrettably, however, in a number of states there is still very low testing.” The States have been adequately funded by the Federal Government to allow them to support surveillance and IPC.

The PTF would intensify risk communication and community engagement to build visibility in order to address some of these challenges. It is disturbing to express concerns about the virus and I call on all to become advocates in support of the National Response.

FG to create oxygen plants across states

Mustapha added that the rehabilitation of five oxygen plants across different tertiary health institutions in Abuja was approved following the oxygen news in the national management response.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had also approved the immediate establishment of at least one oxygen plant in each state of the federation.

Vaccine procurement

The SGF also confirmed that the PTF is making progress on the issue of vaccine access for Nigerians and that Nigerians will be provided with additional details on the accelerated launch and deployment schedule of vaccines.

A crucial period of infections worldwide is what is actually facing us. Mustapha said that we are constantly reviewing our approach to emerging situations, especially in risk communication, vaccine hesitancy, fake news/disinformation.

‘More Intl travelers to be sanctioned’

The SGF has confirmed that the PTF has started to enforce penalties on passengers who have defaulted on the 7th day of post-arrival checks, because their passport numbers have been released and travel restrictions have been imposed for a period of six months as of 1 January 2021.

He added that the PTF has produced more than 20,000 inbound passengers that have also defaulted and that until it is exhausted, the publication will continue weekly.

“Nigerians should know that every default is a public health threat that is unacceptable to us and represents a drawback to the National Response,” he said. We have a responsibility to warn our colleagues, partners and partnerships to comply with the rules laid down.
