The government of Pakistan has claimed that India is planning to launch a “surgical strike” on Pakistani soil and has called on the international community to help de-escalate the situation among neighbors with nuclear weapons.

Speaking to the press on Friday in the capital of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi warned that if threatened, Pakistan would retaliate.

“I have learned from our intelligence sources that India is planning a surgical strike against Pakistan, and they have collected this information,” Qureshi said.

Since a standoff in February 2019 that saw India bomb territory just within Pakistan’s borders and Pakistan shoot down an Indian fighter jet, both have been on a high state of military alert.

Foreign Minister Qureshi warned that if struck, Pakistan would hit “a notch above” back at India.

“I want to make it very clear to India that Pakistan is fully prepared to react and defeat its designs,” he said.

Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan’s national security adviser, said Pakistan had obtained “very specific and reliable information” on Indian plans to launch strikes.

In September 2016, India claimed to have carried out a “surgical strike” to hit armed groups linked to an earlier assault on Indian security forces in the Indian-administered Kashmir town of Uri, Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

At that time Pakistan denied that Indian forces had ever reached the territories held by Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s military and foreign ministry said Indian forces in Pakistan-administered Kashmir fired on and damaged a UN vehicle on Friday.
