As they profited from Andrew Gravillon’s expensive red card to defeat Lorient 2-0 in Wednesday’s Ligue 1 clash, Kylian Mbappe and Moise Kean were on target for Paris Saint-Germain.
Following the previous 2-0 victory at Dijon by the league leaders, PSG entered the game four points adrift of Lille and took time to get going, even though Ander Herrera came nearest to a first-half breakthrough when hitting the crossbar.
Gravillon, however, was dismissed at the Parc des Princes for taking down Mbappe early in the second half and the PSG forward brushed himself down to convert the resulting penalty.
Kean fired nine minutes later in a second goal and from that point on, PSG were under little pressure as they climbed to second ahead of Lyon, heading into the massive top-of-the-table showdown with Lille on Sunday.
Early on, Yoane Wissa got in behind Danilo Pereira, but the improvised PSG defender blocked the shot – suffering an injury in the process that forced him off – and had an easy save to make for Sergio Rico.
Last weekend, Lorient put three goals past Nimes to end a four-game goalless losing streak and they missed another decent opportunity to open the Paris scoring, Terem Moffi racing clear but pulling his shot wide from the far post.
PSG hit the crossbar through Herrera’s curler late in the first half, but they only had to wait until six minutes into the second period to open the scoring thanks to the campaign’s 11th league goal from Mbappe.
The visiting defender, who was given a straight red card and further disciplined by his opponent exercising the penalty under Paul Nardi, broke Mbappe past Gravillon and was brought down.
A big chance went almost immediately begging for Mbappe, but with an hour played, PSG again carved their opponents open, a fine team move resulting in Rafinha releasing Kean to convert past the onrushing Nardi.
Layvin Kurzawa joined Herrera 10 minutes from time to hit the crossbar at the end of a counter, but it didn’t matter as Lorient couldn’t get an answer, Adrian Grbic coming closest to beating Rico late on when hitting the post.
