Philip Tartaglia, the Archbishop of Glasgow, died after catching coronavirus, the Catholic Church in Scotland reported.

Shortly after Christmas, the 70-year-old, who had served as chief of the largest Catholic group in Scotland since 2012, tested positive for Covid-19 and was self-isolated at home.

He died on the Feast of St Mungo, the patron saint of Glasgow, on Wednesday, January 13.

The Church said in a statement: “A statement said: “We announce the death of our Archbishop with the deepest sorrow.

“The Archbishop of Glasgow, Philip Tartaglia, has died suddenly at his home in Glasgow. He was 70 years old.”

“Archbishop Tartaglia, who had worked as Archbishop of Glasgow since 2012, had came back positive for COVID 19 shortly after Christmas and was self-isolating at home.

The Archbishop has served since 2012 as the leader of the largest Catholic group in Scotland.

Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, the Pope’s Ambassador to Great Britain, has been informed.

“It will be for Pope Francis to appoint a new Archbishop to succeed Archbishop Tartaglia, but until then the Archdiocese will be overseen by an administrator.”

A spokesman for the church of St Thomas the Apostle Riddrie said on Facebook: “East End Dean, Canon Andrew McKenzie called today at noon (13 January) with the sudden, shock, news that his Grace, the Archbishop, Most Reverend Philip Tartaglia, is dead.”

In this parish, he spent time at school, and this place was dear to him.

“Please pray for his soul’s eternal rest.

“The parish has no further information at this moment and with you awaits an official statement from the Archdiocese.”

Father Michael J Kane, parish priest of the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Augustine in the Diocese of Motherwell, Scotland, added: “Please pray for the soul of Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, who sadly died this morning, to rest.”
