Arsenal fans have lashed out at club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after he was seen laughing following the 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday.
The Gunners came up short at the Etihad Stadium as Raheem Sterling’s strike proved to be vital.
Aubameyang was underwhelming yet again as he extended his run of games without a goal – his last strike coming against Fulham in the Premier League curtain raiser.
And some fans were left incensed when they saw the Gabon international smiling at full-time while talking to his former Borussia Dortmund team-mate Ilkay Gundogan.
The pair shared a few words and chuckled together briefly, and their interaction was caught on camera.
And several Gunners supporters took to Twitter to question why Aubameyang looked happy after a defeat.
One put: “Why the f*** is he so happy. We just lost with an abysmal display with almost no players actually being asked to do anything.”
“Not my captain,” wrote another.
A third claimed: “Xhaka would never.”
“Only moment Aubameyang had all game,” a fourth slammed.
Mikel Arteta insisted that he was pleased with what he saw from his side at City, despite the result.
“I’ve said not to get anything from the game,” the Arsenal manager said. “I felt we kept growing and growing, having more belief that we could get something.
“I’m proud of the way we played individually and collectively. It’s not easy to produce a performance in a stadium like that.
“We need everything to go our way to get a win here. The three or four chances you need to put them away.
“I think we had to defend deep and they were getting a lot of players close to the box without creating much.
“It’s upsetting to see our team so deep. We could have created more in the final third, the final pass or cross.
“We could have added something else. Listen, to get a win here everything has to go your way.”
