On Saturday, Edo State Police Commissioner Johnson Babatunde Kokumo said the command had uncovered plots by some alleged armed robbers to attack Benin City’s banks, shops, and other commercial locations.
Kokomo, who said this in an interview on the weekend, said that the intelligence report revealed that criminals procured guns and other dangerous weapons to spark fear in the state.
In order to combat any security breach in the state, Kokumon said Armoured Personnel Carriers and other crime-fighting equipment have been placed in place.
He added that some flashpoints were protected on most highways connecting the Edo State and other states that are infamous for illegal activities.
Kokumo noted that the release of over 2,000 prisoners from the two Benin City correctional facilities has contributed to an upsurge in crime in the state.
He called on people to take urgent action to the police about any suspicious character in their vicinity as any reliable information will help keep offenders off the street.
However, he ensured hitch-free celebrations of Christmas and New Year as sufficient protection was placed in place in the state to ensure stability.
