Police would prevent Brits from getting into cars and on trains to attempt to get out of Tier 4 regions, health secretary Matt Hancock claimed on Sunday morning.

Mr. Hancock, speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, was asked if officers would be posted on roads and stations to deter Brits from violating the new laws that came into force on Sunday morning in London and the South East.

He replied: “Of course. It’s the police’s responsibility to police the law”

The news comes in the aftermath of Saturday night’s startling scenes of massive crowds at London stations as people tried to escape to the capital ahead of the coming into force of new laws.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps also advised people to come to train stations in the hardest restricted areas only if they are “permitted” to move.

“Mr. Shapps said It is extremely important for people to obey the advice, stay at home and not try to travel. Our priority must be to stop the spread of this virus, to protect lives and our NHS.

If you are in Tier 4, the rule means that you must sit at home and you can’t stay away from home overnight. You have to remain local in the rest of the world.

“Follow the guidance and please do not come to a station unless you have been permitted to travel. Extra BTP officers have been utilized to ensure only those who need to take essential journeys can travel safely.”

Hancock argued that the strict new steps in the south were put in place in January to try to avoid a new national lockout.

Asked if a national lockdown was necessary, Hancock said Not necessarily, one of the reasons we brought in the strict travel movements in tier 4… is to try to stop this new variant from spreading.”

Hancock also admitted on Sunday that the government claims that the recently discovered and more infectious Covid-19 strain is now out of balance.’

And the day after Boris Johnson essentially canceled Christmas for millions, in a surprising pre-Christmas Covid warning, the health secretary said anyone waking up this morning in the new Tier 4 areas “should act as they have”
