As Athletic Bilbao won a rare 2-1 victory over Real Madrid champions to set up a Supercopa de Espana final against Barcelona, Raul Garcia scored twice.

Athletic had won just one of their previous 22 games against the champions of LaLiga but defeated them on Thursday at La Rosaleda for the first time since March 2015 to earn Marcelino his first win.

Raul Garcia was set up for the opening goal by Dani Garcia and scored again in the first half from the penalty spot to shock Madrid.

After Marco Asensio hit the woodwork twice, Karim Benzema reduced the deficit, but Bilbao held on to end Madrid’s nine-match undefeated record and ensure that they will fight Barca for Sunday’s Estadio de La Cartuja trophy.

When Dani Garcia picked up a loose pass from Lucas Vazquez and threaded an incisive ball through for the unmarked Raul Garcia to slot beyond Thibaut Courtois, Athletic didn’t allow Madrid to relax and they were in front in the 18th minute.

The seasoned midfielder was on goal again seven minutes from time, having flashed a venomous shot wide as the Basque side continued to push Los Blancos high up the pitch.

Another Vazquez lapse appeared to be costly, the defender bundling over Inigo Martinez and Raul Garcia sending Courtois the opposite way seven minutes before the break with an expertly taken spot-kick.

Nacho Fernandez substituted Raphael Varane at half-time, and when he nodded Oscar De Marcos’ cross wide of the near post from close range, Iker Muniain should have put Athletic three goals to the good.

In fast succession, Asensio twice came close to halving the deficit, rattling the near post from close range before hitting the crossbar with a rasping long-range shot.

When he was ruled onside after a VAR search after the flagged was initially lifted with 17 minutes left, Benzema pulled one down.
