The House of Representatives members have opposed a bill aiming to set a 70-year age limit for those running for the President’s office and a 65-year age limit for anyone running for a position in the National Assembly.

The bill, sponsored by Bede Eke, the lawmaker representing the federal constituency of Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala in the House, was defeated before he could even debate the bill. The presence of the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, was required for the discussion to be allowed.

Bede emphasized that the bill is an extension of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run bill and the #EndSARS protests.

he said;

Recently, with the Endsars protests, we had some problems, and we are aware of their requests. This house will be celebrated by our young people if we are to pass this bill.

You can’t talk about Not Too Young To Run when the locations are occupied by people.

However, the leader of the minority, Ndudi Elumelu, opposed the bill because it was discriminatory and inconsistent with section 42 of the 1999 constitution.

Another senator, Uzoma Abonta, also debating against the bill, said that instead of putting a cap, the age bracket should be extended to fit more people by reducing the age to compete to 23 years.

After being urged by other legislators to do so the bill was eventually withdrawn by its sponsor.
