Reps to summon President Buhari over the country’s security situation

House of Representatives

Worried by the escalated degree of insecurity in the world, on 1 December, the House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on President Buhari to update the House on the true state of the country’s security situation.

At today’s plenary, the decision was taken when the House considered a motion moved by Borno State representatives on the recent massacre by Boko Haram insurgents of 43 rice farmers in the state.

After Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila appealed that it would be unacceptable to invite the president to announce the steps being taken to deal with the security situation in the region, the debate had earlier turned rowdy. It was defined by the Speaker as counter-productive.

Any House representatives were opposed to the stance of the speaker and this turned into a rowdy debate.

To settle the matter, the legislators then went into an executive session.

The House resumed after the closed-door executive session and Representative Ahmed Jaha, who is one of the supporters, moved an amendment to invite the President to brief the house on the country’s security situation.

His amendment was supported and adopted overwhelmingly.

However, no date was confirmed for the invitation.
