Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones, became the first openly gay Black men elected to the US Congress

Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones, the Democratic candidates, have made history by being the first openly gay Black men elected to the Congress of the United States.

On Tuesday, November 4th, both New Yorkers were elected and will enter the House in January 2021.

On Tuesday, Ritchie Torres, 32, who is known as an Afro-Latino, secured the House seat representing the 15th congressional district of New York. Though Mondaire Jones, 33, also won his race for the seat serving Westchester and Rockland County, north of New York City, the 17th congressional district.

Mr. Torres is also the New York City Council’s first openly gay elected official. When he was 25 years old, he won the seat.

‘A new age is starting for the South Bronx tonight,’ Torres said in a statement to CBS.

It is the privilege of a lifetime to serve a borough full of important employees who have sacrificed their lives so that they can live in New York City.

The Bronx is important, and their strength, fortune and perseverance have been shown time and again by the lively, caring and talented people who live here.

The Bronx is New York City’s pulse.

Torres continued:’ In the Bronx and in our country, we are at a crossroads.

The plague of COVID-19 has highlighted the disparities that have been permitted in our societies to fester for too long.

The hit our neighborhoods have taken is serious, with a pandemic laid down over an economic crisis with a recovery that only benefits those at the top, not at the bottom.’

Look, an openly LGBTQ Congressional candidate’s victory over a leading homophobic public policy candidate, which to me represents long-overdue poetic justice, “he said.”

After winning his primary, Jones also talked to CBS about the prospect of being one of the first two openly gay Black men elected to Congress.

“He said,” It is a lot of responsibility. “I ‘m proud to have that kind of voice to so many young people and older people all over my district and all over this country who have reached out to me and said,” I’m so motivated by what you do. You give me hope and in a world filled with so much inequality, I can be my authentic self, and it’s really a privilege to be able to do that.
