On this side of the channel, French ProD2 seldom makes news, but that has changed this weekend, with Josaia Raisuqe becoming one of Europe’s most talked-about rugby union stars.

The 26-year-old Fijian and it’s by no means a household name, but after being dismissed in the final seconds of Nevers’ win over Beziers on Friday night, he went viral via social media.

Nevers reached the final stages, leading by just five points, desperately defending their own try-line.

And with time up, referee Laurent Millotte blew his whistle, signaling the visitors a hard-fought victory.

But Raisuqe decided to celebrate in the most peculiar way possible, whilst the rest of the Nevers players ran away in celebration.

Raisuqe made the unprecedented decision to raise the match official above his head with the whistle barely out of Millote’s mouth, whilst the players looked confused.

The referee, however, refused to see the funny side of the incident, handing the winger a red card immediately.

With coach Xavier Pemaja taking a particularly dim view of the celebration, Raisuqe is now in line for some kind of ban.

“They are unacceptable. He’ll be disciplined by the disciplinary committee of the league,’ Pemeja told Canal+ TV.

“I’m going to deal with him. I can’t get it approved. What happened at the end is going to be really bad there.

The video was posted to social media shortly after the match ended, with users dubbing the Lion King classic ‘Circle of Life’ over the top.

Perhaps what is even more shocking about the lavish celebration is the fact that it only pushed Nevers to sixth in the table.

It is doubtful that at the end of the season, Raisuqe will be raising a trophy, but his Millote raise is likely to be seen once for years to come.
