Well, the good news is that it will fly by if 2021 is anything like 2020, since Earth’s rotation is faster than average, so our days are ever-so-slightly shorter than 24 hours long.
The planet is currently revolving at its fastest speed in 50 years, scientists have found.
Our planet’s official timekeepers are now discussing whether it makes sense to subtract a second from time to account for the transition, and put back the exact passage of time in accordance with the Earth’s rotation.
The plans will include inserting a ‘negative leap second’ to account for the slightly shorter days – this has happened for the first time ever.
In order to keep atomic time in line with solar time, this marks a stark contrast to previous years, with a total of 27 “leap seconds” having been applied to our years since the 1970s.
This is because the Planet has taken slightly longer than 24 hours to complete a rotation for decades, but has taken slightly less since last year.
The day was 1.4602 milliseconds shorter than the full 24 hours on 19 July 2020, the shortest day since records started.
The shortest day in 2005 happened before last year, but this record has been broken an astonishing 28 times in the past 12 months.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Peter Whibberley, a senior research scientist from the time and frequency group of the National Physical Laboratory, said: “It is definitely right that the World is moving faster now than in the last 50 years at any time.”
It is also probable that if the Earth’s rotation rate increases more, it would take a negative leap second, but it is too early to tell if this is likely to happen.
“There are also international discussions taking place about the future of leap seconds, and it’s also possible that the need for a negative leap second might push the decision towards ending leap seconds for good.”
