Following a narrow loss away to Wolves, Sheffield United has been relegated from the Premier League after a two-season stay in the top flight.

Despite a valiant effort under interim manager Paul Heckingbottom following the departure of Chris Wilder, the Blades were defeated 1-0 by Willian Jose’s first goal in the tournament.

Wilder left the club in March after guiding them to an incredible ninth-place finish last season after taking them from the third tier to the Premier League.

With just six games left to play, they are 19 points behind 17th-placed Burnley, with just four wins and two draws among 26 defeats.

After that, Heckingbottom told Sky Sports: “Isn’t it just about the outcomes? Success is the only thing we have power over. We must leave with our heads held high.

“I believe we should have gotten more out of the game. It probably sums up our current season.

“You just need to look at the physical data from this season’s Premier League. It isn’t due to a lack of commitment. They’ll give it their all, and you saw it tonight. It was only that one instance. We gave Wolves every opportunity.

“We put ourselves in just too many good scoring opportunities to not score. We were on top of the world. In the second half, everybody could see it. We built our best moment, and the ball was in the back of the net 20 seconds later.

“That has gotten away from the team this season, and that is why we have suffered.”

“It’s those times,” says the narrator. The small amount of quality that is needed to win games. On the other hand, is a bit too flexible and having the ability to close certain opportunities out.

“Those are the times [in the past] when Sheffield United have been particularly solid.” But if you had to pick one game to represent the season, it was that one.

“We were in command, but we squandered opportunities, and this league will not give you another chance.”
