Sheffield Wednesday have sacked manager Garry Monk with the club one place off the bottom of the Championship table.

After taking over last September, Monk oversaw a 16th-placed finish in his debut campaign at Hillsborough, but his side have won just three of their opening 11 league fixtures this season, with chairman Dejphon Chansiri having set lofty targets.

On Wednesday, after being found guilty of violating EFL spending laws, a 12-point deduction was awarded in August for the 2020-21 season, but the penalty was halved to six points last week following an appeal.

Wednesday will be outside the relegation zone on 21st without the points deduction, and just two points back from 12th-placed Blackburn Rovers.

“I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish all the best for the future to Garry and his team,” Chansiri told

“I want to thank you for the time and effort that Garry and his team have given to Sheffield Wednesday.”

The sacking of Monk comes on the back of two promising results, with Wednesday beating high-flying Bournemouth before a goalless draw on Saturday against top-half Millwall.

However, a string of four successive losses followed those games, which had put Wednesday in a troubling position before their points deduction had been halved.

Last week, Chansiri appeared to offer Monk his help in an interview with Sky Sports.

“He’s still here at the moment,” said the Thai businessman.

“I still give 100 percent back to my coach, all the time.”

Asked if Monk was under immediate pressure to save his work, Chansiri said, “What he needs to do, he knows.”

Since being offered his first managerial job, Monk has managed five clubs, while still a player, at Swansea in 2014.

The 41-year-old continued to run Leeds, Middlesbrough and Birmingham, with none of his tenures lasting more than 18 months at those clubs.

For the international break, the Championship is on hold, with Wednesday not scheduled to return to action until November 21, away to Preston.
