Sheldon Adelson, a Republican billionaire donor, died at 84 after fighting cancer


Sheldon Adelson, owner of a billionaire casino and Republican megadonor, died after a cancer battle. He was eighty-seven.

In 2019, Adelson was diagnosed with non-lymphoma Hodgkin’s and recently stepped away to continue his care from the business.

He died of complications due to caring for non-Lymphoma Hodgkin’s on Monday night, his Las Vegas Sands business reported on Tuesday.

Last night, at the age of 87, our founder and visionary leader, Sheldon G. Adelson, died of complications related to treatment for non-Lymphoma,” the statement said.

In Israel, the birthplace of his wife, a funeral will take place, with arrangements for a memorial service held in Las Vegas to be announced at a later date, according to the company.

A Republican called Adelson an “American patriot, a generous benefactor of humanitarian activities, and a strong supporter of Israel.” in a speech by former President George W. Bush.

Bush said, “Sheldon battled his way out of a tough Boston neighborhood to build a successful enterprise that loyally employed tens of thousands — and entertained millions,”

Adelson and his wife, Miriam, were the biggest donors to President Trump.


After the 2010 cycle, per OpenSecrets, the pair have contributed more than $525 million to federal election campaigns and committees.

According to Forbes, the billionaire, who is survived by his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, and five children, had a net worth of $35.6 billion as of Jan. 11.

Adelson entered the casino industry in 1989 when, for $128 million, he bought the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. He is credited with helping turn Las Vegas for conferences and exhibitions into the top U.S. destination.

He opened Venetian Macao on the Cotai Strip in 2017, helping recreate the Las Vegas Strip in the People’s Republic of China’s autonomous region.
